1972 Buick GSX Clone Gets Mechanical and Electrical Upgrades

A 1972 Buick GSX clone recently came into Cleveland Power & Performance for a variety of mechanical, electrical, driveline, and fitment work.

We started by addressing the suspension, including control arms, coil springs, sway bar links, and determining the proper ride height. The TH350 transmission was removed and swapped to a 2004R, and the shifter linkage and transmission mount were modified for proper fitment and driveline angle.

During the exhaust work, we discovered the engine was sitting crooked due to improperly positioned mounts. We corrected the engine placement, modified the mounts, and fabricated aluminum spacers to provide proper header and frame clearance. Custom exhaust sections were fabricated and TIG welded, with the mufflers, tailpipes, and hangers properly fitted.

The steering system required a custom-built steering shaft and additional header clearance. We also addressed steering alignment and took the car for a professional alignment.

On the electrical side, we rewired the rear taillights for the Digitails system, installed LED reverse lights, and completed daytime running light wiring. We also found and secured a shorting power circuit behind the dash.

Additional work included valve adjustment, fuel system repairs, ignition tumbler replacement, transmission service, and numerous smaller fitment and detail corrections.

After testing and road driving, the Buick is significantly closer to being a reliable and enjoyable classic muscle car.

At Cleveland Power & Performance, we work on the mechanical, electrical, driveline, suspension, and performance needs of classic and collector vehicles—helping owners sort out the details that make these cars function the way they should.
