Cleveland Power and Performance recently completed a 350 small-block Chevy engine build and installation for a 1988 Pontiac Trans Am.
The project started with a rebuilt TBI truck-based 350 that was bored .030-inch over and equipped with a mild camshaft, stock crank and rods, hypereutectic pistons, and TBI cylinder heads. We completely disassembled and inspected the engine before beginning assembly.
The engine was fitted with a new camshaft, lifters, timing set, rear main seal, oil pump pickup, and other components before installation. We also performed necessary machine work to the intake manifold to ensure proper fitment and torque.
Installing the engine into the Trans Am required several custom modifications. We addressed header and accessory clearance, alternator fitment, coolant sensor locations, battery cable routing, wiring, cooling system changes, and transmission installation. A cracked flexplate and broken crossmember bolt were also repaired during the installation.
After priming the engine, setting ignition timing, adjusting the valve lash, and verifying fuel pressure, the 350 was started and properly tuned. Following approximately 20 miles of break-in, we performed an oil change and verified 53 psi of oil pressure at warm idle.
The Trans Am was then test driven, final clearance issues were addressed, and the fluids were topped off.
At Cleveland Power and Performance, we specialize in classic car engine builds, LS swaps, small-block Chevy installations, wiring, driveline, and performance upgrades. This 1988 Trans Am is another example of our approach to combining reliable mechanical work with the custom fabrication and problem-solving required for classic performance vehicles.
